Info about military move?

Ok here’s the deal..this is my husband’s first duty station.

ALL of our furniture is in storage in something called PODS (person on demand storage).

Because our stuff is in portable storage, we’re leaning towards a DITY move. I talked to the PODS people and they arrange all the weight tickets. We’ll be going ahead with our cars and pet and finding housing, then having the POD delivered to our new apartment.

The issues I’m running into…do we need to arrange this with the Camp Pendleton transportation office BEFORE we deliver the POD? I just don’t know how it works and I want to make sure we don’t end up losing our reimbursement because we didn’t set it up with someone first.

My husband doesn’t have to check in until November 15, so he’s currently on leave and has already left his previous base (MOS school). We were hoping to go to Cali next week and find an apartment and move in before he has to check in, that way we can just do it all at once. But does he have to be checked into his new unit first?

I spoke with the camp pendleton housing office and all they said was we have to have someone over 18 sign the lease…they never specified that he had to check in before signing it (btw we’re not applying for on-base housing. We want to live off-base), so I’m wondering if the same thing applies with moving.

Can we move in before, save our expense receipts and weight tickets and take them to the transportation office before he checks in, or do we have to wait until November 15 when he checks in before we can move our stuff?

I really don’t want to be moving around thanksgiving, or while my husband is working, that’s why we want to get it out of the way while he’s on his leave.

oh ya…and we don’t need any sort of moving advances or anything. We have everything needed to move..it’s already packed, in storage, I’ve received a quote from PODS…I just need to know when it’s ok for me to have them deliver the stuff to the new place.
He’s on permissive TDY right now…he was given 10 days leave and 5 days of driving before he has to check in.

i did the same thing when i moved from cali to texas. i did a dity move and i arranged for my own move. i got reinbured after i was signed into my unit. when your spouse gets to his duty station he will go through in processing and when he does that they will ask for reciepts for moving trucks, hotels stayed in while in route, and they will ask how many cars and mileage so they will reinburse you. just make sure you keep reciepts for everything. since your living off post you can move in anytime. you dont have to wait for housing which is a pain. it takes about 2 weeks to be reinbursed for everything. well i hope this helps.

Definitely, definitely check with Camp Pendleton Transportation office first. It costs you nothing but time and a phone call and it could save you thousands of dollars. It is amazing what can happen when you don’t jump through the right hoops.

You need to call TOM and they will answer all the questions. If they will move your stuff from the PODS then do it. Much easier. Good Luck in finding an apartment. If you have any questions email me. I am here in San Diego. Also, be careful many places do not allow pets. Even housing has restrictions on certain pets.

First things first…the Traffic Management office at your husband’s CURRENT base MUST be contacted in order to get approval for the DITY move. He’ll fill out some paperwork, get the authorization, etc. Once you do that, and have your stuff delivered, you take your completed weight forms, invoices, etc. into the gaining base’s Traffic Management Office in order for them to process your claim. Keep in mind that, once he signs into the base, you are authorized to have any storage costs (up to ninety days after you sign in) reimbursed as well. Just keep the receipts, and turn ‘em in every month for three months (if you need to).

-The Servicemember needs to call Camp Pendleton transportation office before you decide anything. He has to fill out paperwork on both ends of the move, in the beginning and in the end.

- Save EVERY receipt, from the twix bar you buy at the gas station to the cost of the POD.

- When you guys get to Camp P, tell him to sign in and apply for Permissive TDY. He get 10 free days of leave to house hunt and set up the home.

- Check with where ever you plan on living about the POD.
